Our projects

This series of three art exhibitions will explore everyday aesthetic categories emerging under late capitalism. The theme is inspired by and in response to the work of feminist scholar and cultural theorist Sianne Ngai, a professor at Stanford University, whose research explores the commonplace aesthetic categories that have emerged in response to capitalism. Ngai argues that these marginalized everyday aesthetics, in contrast to more academically recognized aesthetics such as "beautiful" or "sublime" more directly speak to our daily interaction with and experience of the world around us.

A shortcut, a cheap trick, a ploy to convince you that you need something that you really don’t, the gimmick chronically promises more than it delivers. An aesthetic category first researched by cultural theorist Sianne Ngai, the gimmick isn’t just a thing, it is a judgement: an expression of skepticism and mistrust, it exposes something deeper about how we think about production and consumption in a capitalistic system. And yet, the gimmick is also an object of fascination and humor. It can be comedic, playful and even a tool of social critique.

Past Projects

The position of the minute hand in relation to midnight on the Doomsday Clock serves as a metaphor for how close humanity is to self-inflicted global catastrophe. The time is now set closer than at any other time in history: 90 seconds to midnight. 90 Seconds to Midnight is thus intended to encourage artists to address, with time running out, themes of: the environment and climate change, political upheaval, technological and scientific developments as a whole, and ecological catastrophe.
